So I haven't looked at my ipad cable until today (had it for about 5 months now). One side is completely fine the other has some of the pad missing (black) and a little bit of corrosion to. They have not been in contact with water or anything.

Oxidation occurs when dissimilar metals are in contact with each other. What is that end of the Lightning cable plugged into? Is that an Apple product?
Well one end is the 'charger' that the ipad came with and the other end is the ipad itself.
The part that is 'corroding' is the part that connects to the ipad. I didn't know there were other devices that used the lightning connector that were not apple products.
If it's an Apple Lightning cable, bring it to an Apple Store and have it replaced.
I'm also confused by your statement, as the charger end should be a USB connector, not a Lightning connector?

yes the charger end is USB (which is perfectly fine), the other end has two sides (one is perfectly fine and the other has the damage).
THis happened to me once. The only way os to replace it. If it is not replaced, the ipad will mot charge. I brought my cord in to Radioshack and I replaced it with a 6 ft cocered cord, and to make it more durrable, I got a fuzzy one. And this has lasted me MUCH more than the previous one. Trust me its good.
