Why does my iMac run slow

Hi,

We are using an iMac, 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with OS X Yosemite, version 10.10.3

Of late the computer is working hard, whirring away, making anything we do very slow, sometimes just typing takes ages to show on the screen.

Not sure how to resolve this or find out what the Mac is trying to do - of concern too is that we get an error message when trying to open data from the time machine in finder. The time machine appears to be performing back ups.

Can anyone suggest how we might resolve the issue and also ensure that we can back up everything to the time machine

Not a computer whizz I'm afraid, however, keen to learn and willing to follow instruction.

Many thanks to all those listening.
