Consistent lagging & memory leaks MBP

Hello,

Hoping that someone can help me with a problem i'm completely unable to solve after many hours spent on google. My mid 2012 MBP has become incredibly laggy and slow whenever I use more than one programme at a time, which is ridiculous given the miniscule amount of strain that this is. I've found that resetting my PRAM fixes this somewhat temporarily, but this doesn't seem to be fixing anything long-term. The problem has been growing for around two months at a guess and does seem to be getting slowly worse. Right now, the computer is working just fine, as all I really have running is Chrome, but as I use the computer for work this can't continue.

I'm happy to run whatever sort of diagnostics this community needs to investigate further, but am unsure what you may need. Would be appreciative of any help given.

Thanks a lot!

6 Easy Tips to Speed Up OS X Yosemite on Your Mac

Avoid using any third-party software that claims to clean up your computer. Usually this software does more bad than good. Furthermore, you don't need it. Note that all computers will become slower over time even under normal use. Experienced users typically erase the hard drive and do a clean install from scratch at least once a year or whenever installing a major OS upgrade. Of course doing so also means you must maintain regular and multiple backups.

Add more RAM or cut back on the number of concurrently running applications and utilities. Remove unnecessary software such as anti-malware and software that promises to clean your Mac. Check for runaway processes: Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan acti… Also see:

Mavericks and later

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the View menu. Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU%, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

Hey Kappy,

Thanks so much for replying. Unfortunately I don't think any of those have/will fix this issue. I've run through each of those articles and there's nothing there that I haven't tried already. Also, you specifically recommended avoiding third-party cleaning services, but a lot of points in those articles recommend downloading cleaners, uninstallers ect.

I don't believe that running too many programmes is the issue, my computer starts lagging really as soon as I have more than one programme going at a time. A computer with 4GB of RAM should be more than capable of dealing with having Chrome and Spotify open at the same time...i'd expect a calculator to be able to handle that!

I have had Activity Monitor open almost constantly for the last week and have never noticed a big memory load or pressue. For all intents and purposes, the system is running fine (according to Activity Monitor), but every action is slow, laggy and often results in the spinning death beachball.

Thanks again for your input and i'd love to hear any further ideas you have!

I haven't noticed a pattern of particular programmes slowing the computer down, rather just any time I use multiple programmes. Who knows though!

Obvious need for more RAM. OS X keeps your memory pressure reading low by killing OS X processes to free up memory. Chrome and Tweetdeck are using more than half of the CPU time. Together with the low memory this is causing a major impact on how slow the computer is running. You should check on how they appear in Activity Monitor as this often indicates an incompatibility or, perhaps, a corrupted preference or cache file.

Under Login Items are Flux and Spotify. Personally, I see little need for either. And, you have Virtual Box installed. If you don't actually use Windows then consider getting the uninstaller to remove it properly.

Finally, under the Diagnostics you should note problems associated with VLC and PhotoBooth.

Jun 2, 2015 4:18 PM in response to Kappy

I'm surprised that i'd need more RAM, given how simple the things i'm trying to do are. This laptop is supposedly aimed at working professionals and it requires an upgrade to run two programmes simultaneously? My phone is capable of doing more... Really, really disappointed in Apple if this is the case. I appreciate the time you just put into this, but is this not strange?

I've removed the login items and uninstalled Virtual Box, which I rarely use any more. I don't really understand what the diagnostics are saying about VLC and PhotoBooth unfortunately, that's past my understanding.

Thanks again for all of your help.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

I'm afraid you don't really understand what is going on with your computer. The fault is not Apple's. The fault is what you are using on the computer and not noting that there are software problems. It's not a question of how many programs you can run concurrently. Actually, you were running many more than two. The issue is have two or more of your programs causing incompatible interactions. Two of your programs, Chrome and Tweetdeck, together are slowing down the computer significantly. An indication that you need to stop using both of them to see if the slowdowns stop.

Jun 2, 2015 4:39 PM in response to Kappy

You're right, I don't have a clue what's going with it, which is why i'm very grateful for your input. So, how do I find these problems and/or fix them? Chrome and Tweetdeck are both widely used programmes, so they shouldn't be inherently incompatible? Should I re-install them?

Linc, thanks for your advice, will report back tomorrow when working and the computer starts playing up again.

Jun 2, 2015 4:53 PM in response to Jam300

Chrome has always had persistent incompatibility problems with OS X. But more importantly is whether those two are somehow incompatible with each other. Try using Safari instead. See if that changes anything.

My initial thought is for you to try using a different user account. Open Users & Groups and create a new user account with admin status. Log out of your account and log into this new account. Open Chrome and Tweetdeck (nothing else) and note from Activity Monitor how much CPU percentage they now use.

Mavericks and later

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the View menu. Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar. Click twice on the %CPU column header to display in descending order.

If you no longer find them using so much %CPU as before, then the problem may be due to corrupted preference or cache files in your regular account. If they both are using a lot of CPU percentage quit Tweetdeck to see what happens.

Jun 3, 2015 9:17 AM in response to Kappy

Kappy,

Thanks again for your help. I have been using a new user account all day, and this has been much, much better. I did have one instance where one of my Chrome Helper threads shot up to almost 2GB of usage, but this subsided and it has been great all day. I was going to give it a whole day before reporting back, but did just experience a little slow down and beachball, so here are the logs for this time as per Linc's request:

As I said, this was a very minor disturbance compared to what i'm used to, so perhaps this is just ordinary lag. I can accept this level of performance, but thought i'd post all the same to see your thoughts.

Thanks again for your help so far, it does seem that you're on to something.

Jun 3, 2015 9:49 AM in response to Linc Davis

I suppose that remains to be seen, but no, not entirely. I am still having issues, although much less so than before.

Thanks again, for both of your help, it really is appreciated.

A program, or perhaps more than one, is at times using excessive memory, causing the whole system to be temporarily unresponsive. That can happen for two reasons:

A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)

Not enough memory for your usage pattern

Please note that if the cause is a memory leak, installing more memory will not help. That's likely if you already have more than 4 GB of memory. Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.

When you notice the unresponsiveness, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab.

If the graph at the bottom of the window is in the yellow or red zone, click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select

View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory

from the menu bar.

If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, or if kernel_task is using more than about 1.5 GB, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.

The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.

Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, remove the software. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.

"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.

If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.

The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:

sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total

where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.
