iPhone charges on and off every second from macbook

My iPhone 4s has no problem chafing when plugged into a wall or someone else's laptop. However, when plugged into my one year old macbook air, it charges on and off every second. I can't use it because it is constantly vibrating and alerting me that it is now charging. It's not the cable or my phone, what is the problem with my laptop's usb drive?
