Why does my Mac Mini sound like it's ejecting a cd when there isn't one inside?

For a few weeks, the cd drive of my late 2009 Mac Mini has been "ejecting" a disk... the problem is that there's nothing in the disk drive.

iPad, iOS 7.1.2

What if you place on in the drive?

Try resetting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM

It could be that optical drive died. The one in my late late 2009 Mini failed over two years ago. The symptom was that it would eject all disks. I used an external opticl drive and installed another HD in the place of the optical drive.
