Issue with dictation length - iPhone 6

I and a colleague are struggling with dictation. We have noticed that whereas we previously were able to dictate messages at length (to our iPhones) we now seem set to a hard limit of approximately 40 seconds.

A trawl of various sites suggests this is the norm but prior to iOS 8.3 (which we are both on now) we were able to dictate almost continuously for an unrestricted time. Has there been a change between versions? And are we now back to how it was in 2011?
