How can I clear updates I don't want to install?
all of a sudden I have 16 updates, some are over a year old. I.Would like to delete them but I don't know how.

They are updates that you haven't yet downloaded ? If they are then the only way to remove them is to download them (or delete the app from your iPad) ; if they've been downloaded (and have 'open' against them) then they should disappear off the list in 30 days.
