my iPad does not recognize my printer (epson XL 424), how do I connect the two?

The iPad wants to see an AirPrint compatible printer......and your Epson XL 424 is not.
An App like Printopia installed on your Mac might allow the iPad to be able to print to your Epson printer. There is a free trial, so you will know if Printopia will work before you buy. More info in the link below:
