Right click on the folder in the Favorites bar and select “Delete”.
or
Click “Bookmarks” in the Safari menu bar and choose “Edit Bookmarks” from the dropdown.
Right click on the Folder and select “Delete”.
For an individual item, click the disclosure triangle beside the Folder name.
When the list appears, right click on the item and choose “Delete”.
Thanks for the extended answer but unfortunately this does not work on the trackpad on this Macbook.
But I did eventually find that CTRL-Click did work.
Doubtless there is some Preference Setting that will make Right-click work.
Sorry, I don't have a new MackBook to test.
I've just got an e-mail from Apple Support Communities which suggests:
"System Preferences > Trackpad > Point & Click
Enable "Secondary Click" and select Tap or click with two fingers"
And this is what my machine was already set to. But "Click with two fingers" in fact also does the mustard. Many thanks to Apple Support Communities.
