Unlocking o2 Iphone 4 - Rest?

Hi all,

I lost my phone and have bought a iphone 4 from someone which is locked to o2. I am on another network provider so have requested from a phone shop to unlock the phone – which was asked on Sunday.

I placed my sim in on Monday and noticed I could use the wifi and apps on the phone, but still waiting for it to unlock for my network to work.

Currently it says ‘No service’ and I was told that once it has been unlocked I will not have to do anything with the phone as long as it’s connected to the wifi it should unlock.

However I have been reading that if you don’t have the original o2 sim in the phone, the phone will have to be reset in order for it to unlock?

Does anyone know whether that’s correct?

Many thanks,

Tessa

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, I was going to go via o2, the guys instore told me to fill the online form but I didn't have any details on the phone as it was previous a old pay monthly. Didn't even know the old number. So just went straight to this store to save time. The guys in vodafone mentioned I could go their :/

You're right probably not legit, but would you still know whether I need to do a reset? Or should it just unlock automatically?

Thanks again!

As per the Apple instructions, sine you already have the other SIM, you do not have to restore the phone. Simply insert the sim after the phone has been unlocked by the carrier. It will then prompt you for your iCloud ID and password. After entering those, the phone will be unlocked.

You only need to restore as the Apple instructions say, is if you don't already have the other carriers SIM.

If you have a SIM card from a carrier other than your current carrier, follow these steps:

  1. Remove your SIM card and insert the new SIM card.
  2. Complete the setup process.

If you don't have another SIM card you can use, follow these steps to complete the process:

  1. Back up your iPhone.
  2. When you have a backup, erase your iPhone.
  3. Restore your iPhone from the backup you just made.

As you can see, the instructions only say to restore if you don't already have the other carriers SIM.
