iMac Running Slowly - What can I do to speed it up?

My iMac is running slowly and I spend a lot of time looking at the spinning wheel.

Should I expect this looking at the overview? It seems early as it's only 3.5 years old and doesn't really get used heavily - See overview screen shot below

What can I do to improve the speed my machine is running at?
