Q: Surface Pro 3 to Imac as a monitor

Has anyone had any success using an iMac as a monitor for a surface pro 3...I tried using a mini display to mini display but no luck??

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

someone said that I should use a thunderbolt cable instead of the Mini Display...??
