Q: Getting File Sharing to work with Mac OS 9 (and Mac OS 10.1): is it possible?

Hello!

I have File Sharing set up on my 2014 2.6 GHz Mac mini running Mac OS X Yosemite. Any device in my arsenal running Panther or better (maybe even Jaguar, but I don't have it on anything) can access it. However, my 600 MHz Graphite iMac running 10.1 (with a partition for 9.2.2) and my 400 MHz AGP Power Mac G4 (when it's on its 9.2.2 hard drive) cannot access it. I believe I have read this somewhere that this is not possible within the default software, however, I would like to know some alternatives. Is there anything I can do client-wise OR receiver-wise to make this work? I have tried Fetch 4.0.3 on the Power Mac with no success. Additionally, the Mac mini being my main computer, I would prefer to stick to that computer, but would like to see alternatives.

Thank you for the input!

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

    In addition:

Mac OS 9.2.2 gives different responses when I use Chooser or Network Browser: Chooser just attempts to "Contact" it forever, and Network Browser says, "This file server uses an incompatible version of the AFP protocol". Mac OS 10.1 says that it cannot find a server.

Haven't tried it past 10.5.8 since no longer have an OS9 Mac.

But Appletalk was the big problem,it no longer works for files.

    My notes on it...

OSX.4.x lost the file transfer ability of Appletalk... 10.1.5 thru 10.3.9 had it!

With OS9 set with Appletalk to using TCP/IP, and or Chooser>AppleShare+IP, you can connect to the 10.4.8 machine.

Another solution is OpenDoor's $39 Shareway IP, (some OS7, 8, 9 releases had a limited version included)...

    http://www.opendoor.com/shareway/

    Which makes OS9 Tiger compatable.

"Mac OS X 10.4 and later don't support Personal File Sharing (or other AFP) over Appletalk, though by initiating the connection from the opposite direction you could still achieve an IP connection from a Mac OS 8 computer to a sharing Mac OS X computer. The Network preference pane in Mac OS X 10.4 and later still offers the AppleTalk checkbox, but it is for browsing AppleTalk-advertised resources and zones. The subsequent connection must be over TCP/IP."

The table at http://www.applefool.com/se30/#afpnetwork could perhaps be of interest to you. An alternative solution could possibly be to test a small FTP server (like the now free NetPresenz) on a Mac OS 9 computer; an FTP client at a modern computer should allow you to gain access to this FTP server (fetch/download or put/upload files).
