Old iPhoto to iCloud

I've got tons of pictures on my old 2006 iMac running an old OS and an old version of iPhoto that I'd like to upload to iCloud. What's the easiest way to do it?

iCloud Photo Library is not a backup - it is an operating library that is modified by all devices that use it

You must still have a backup if you photos are valuable to you

Apple clearly states this in their iCloud hype page

Use Time Machine to back up your Photos library

Your photos and videos are important. Even if you use iCloud Photo Library, it’s recommended that you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, including your Photos library.

Keep your Photos library and Time Machine backups on different disks. An easy way to do this is to keep your Photos library in your Pictures folder (the default location), and set Time Machine to back up to an external drive, a disk on your network, or a Time Capsule.
