Texting a period (.) from your Apple computer to retrieve photos

I have been told that if you sent someone a text from your Apple computer with ONLY a period (.) in the message, doing that will somehow allow you to access all of the deleted photos that have been sent by that person to you or that you have sent to them. How does this work?

If you use Messages to text a period to one of your contacts, then the result is they will receive a message with only a period in it. There may be some service provider through which special texting commands will retrieve information or other details about your account, or past messages sent, etc., but this is not through Apple's services.
