External keyboard and mouse

Hi, I'm using a macbook pro with an external monitor and when I use an external (wired) keyboard and mouse (wireless) my inbuilt keyboard and trackpad are disabled. The result is, if I forget and unplug my macbook, I have to do a hard shutdown and restart it to make them work again. Is this common? I'm new to Mac and I'm hoping there's a setting somewhere I don't know about?
