Problem with my MacBook Prop keyboard only types special characters.

How do I stop my MacBook Pro keyboard from typing only special characters. The keyboard was working normally when I accidentally hit the caps locks key and the shift key and possibly another key causing the problem. I attached an external keyboard and it works fine.
