my email continues to receive notification that an email has arrived but when I click on the email app, it is just a white screen then crashes after a few seconds. I have already tried restarting my phone as well.

Since Mail is an iOS native app, these steps are the ones that apply in your case:
Follow these steps if you have an unresponsive app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Restart the app
Close the app and open it again.
Restart your device
Turn your device off and back on.
Check for iOS and app updates
- Make sure that you're using latest version of iOS.
- Open the App Store and tap Updates.
- If updates are available, tap Update All.
- If asked, enter your Apple ID password.
