Compare button loses all edits in drummer?

I have the smart controls up for a drummer region. If I make an edit to a parameter e.g. mute the cymbals and then click compare the controls go back to the factory defaults i.e. the cymbals are no longer muted. The compare button stays greyed out and I lose that edit and have to go back and do it again. The directions say:

Compare your edits to the saved Smart Control settings

Click the Compare button in the Smart Controls menu bar.
To return to the edited version, click the Compare button again.

The problem is there is no way that I can find to save the smart control settings. They save with the project but if you click compare they disappear.

Am I missing something?
