What is Remote Desktop Client ?

I have the 'Remote Desktop Client' update in App Store. (Version 3.8.3.1)

It says: 'The 3.8.4 update is recommended for all Apple Remote Desktop clients... '

What is this 'Remote Desktop Client' for?
Is this some sort of a program that built into OS Mavericks?
I've never installed and never used something like this.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Part of:

System Preferences -> Sharing -> Screen Sharing

System Preferences -> Sharing -> Remote Management

The Remote Management is more in depth and used with Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) package. ARD is intended to manage a classroom full of Macs or a small business with several Macs.

ARD is NOT needed if all you are interested in is some simple screen sharing with other Macs.

If you use Screen Sharing at all, you should install the update.
