Import them to IPhoto, select them and export to a desktop folder - using the finder drag that folder to the unlocked, mounted SDHC card

When I select photos, the choice to export photos is greyed out and not useable.
Did you import them to iPhoto from the shared PhotoStream first as I posted?

I'm opening them and selecting them in iPhoto so aren't they already imported to iPhoto. I believe they get downloaded and imported automatically. There is a selection checked in iPhoto preferences for - Importing: Copy Items to Photos Library. Is there something else I have to do?
Yes - as posted twice import them - select them in the shared PS and right click and "IMPORT" you can not do anything with photos in iPhoto until you import them
That was step 1 - you have to complete it before moving on to step2, 3, etc
