I cannot change my gmail on my Mac!

I tried changing both the gmail and password under 'Internet Accounts' but it then says "Authentication Failed" and so this little window in the top right hand corner keeps popping up: "Google Password Required" showing the old deleted gmail of course...arrrrgggghhh! Please help - why isn't it allowing the new gmail and password? Weird-
