What is the point of allowing editing on the phone if you lose all your changes when you import photos?

I thought I'd save time and crop, brighten, delete photos during my time away. Sadly when I went to import all my photos all the changes were lost. What is the point of having an editing function on the phone when you have to do it all again when you import the photos?
