Apple tv stuck on preparing apple tv

I have a ATV 3 which is in restore mode. I have no remote just the ATV, Power cord, and usb cable (not from apple). I hook it all up to my windows 7 laptop and it reads it. I open itunes which also reads it and I click on restore and update. It gets all the way up to preparing apple tv for restore (it goes all the way through) And it gets stuck on that forever and when something finally comes up it says "The apple tv could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1604). I've used the restore from apple and also a ISPW that i download which was AppleTV3,1_7.1_12F69_Restore. I've used several different usb cords all to no avail....
Itunes is fully updated to 12.1.2. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated

some computers (mostly cheap laptops)

have 1 real usb port and then use a internal usb hub to split it into 2

the thing with usb ports is that rule of thumb is they get 0.5 amps of current

pr. port so if it's just split into 2 they have to share the 0.5 amp and if you have connected something which

use all of the 0.5amps already connecting the appletv would mean it could not get the current it needs

about cables then it seems that some cables sold are not "real" usb cables but cables with usb connectors but only the charging pins connected to save money these cables will still charge phones connected to them but not work with "real" usb devices

If your Apple TV fails to restore through iTunes……..

  • Check that you have correctly followed the instructions for your model of Apple TV.
  • If not already, try using a powered USB port.
  • Repeat the process but this time try connecting the cable while iTunes is closed.
  • Repeat the process with another cable.
  • Try restoring the Apple TV on another computer in another location.

This leads me to another question. How do I figure out if my laptop has enough current to do what I need? I have a HP G72 (if that helps) Also how do I find out if I'm using the right type of USB cable? All of the ones I tried transfer data and they power phones I used in the past such as LG phones or ZTE phones. Buying anything (right now) is out of the question I would like to use stuff I have.
Thank you for your replies though I'm finally getting somewhere 😝
