This is generally not considered a mistake. the apple watch will only count it as exercise if it fits it's definition of exercise (e.g: elevated heart rate). if your walk was slow and what would be considered "normal", the watch is naturally not going to count it as exercise. remember, the watch isn't there to make you feel good about yourself by showing you lies. it's there to help you live a healthier life. try other types of exercise to work up to your 30 minutes a day.

but if you feel like your walks are deserving of being counted as exercise and you want your watch to show that, start a workout when going for walks.

    Good Luck

So I started workout and recorded a 2 mile brisk walk.  Heart rate was definitely in excess of 90 bpm, yet no movement on the exercise ring at all. Why is there no interaction between workout and activity?  Seems to me they are definitely related yet don't seem to have any synergy. Interestingly enough, went to the gym and rode stationary bicycle for a half hour and it DID show up on activity. Curious.

This seems to be a bug based on a general calibration in the watch. I have/had the same issue - a brisk walk with a very elevated heart rate (hills etc.) - did not register as exercise though it did register as many movement calories. I am a big unfit guy on a get fit regime and over time I have been able to increase my walking speed on my workouts and low and behold, I now get about 50-75% of my walking minutes registered as exercise on the green ring. My stationery bike sessions have always been 90-100% registered.

It seems to me that this is a simple case of the Watch requiring a minimum speed to count as a brisk walk regardless of HR elevation. This is an issue for less fit people where they are (as I was) getting a "good" walking workout but not moving fast enough to count for the exercise ring. My unscientific research suggests that a pace above 3mph (<20 minute mile pace) is required for rolling the green ring for a walking workout.

A month into daily cardio workouts and my speed/pace is up and HR for an equivalent workout is down. Thanks Watch...

Workouts don't seem to make any difference. It seems to be a pace-based definition of walking exercise.

Well, I certainly did not assume, "remember, the watch isn't there to make you feel good about yourself by showing you lies." I need a link to technical documentation about how this feature works. I refer to this as a white paper. I must say I definitely do not feel good after your remark.

I Totally agree. A snarky comment was not helpfull yas9n. We are trying to understand why the software /hardware does not work as expected, not to "feel good about ourselves".   As a professional software developer, I am always interested in hearing from users who have questions or constructive comments about my work.  your comment was neither.

Well said. That was definitely uncalled for.

I also gave up on the outdoor walk option and went to the option of "other". That made the exercise ring move accordingly, until a fix comes through, I guess.

I Noticed on Friday when I used "other" it did record my exercise. Yesterday when I did a good walk it did not register. Like you said, maybe use "other" for now. I do have a session at the Apple Store today so will ask about this.

I would be interested in hearing what the Apple store rep says about this. I do believe the answer lies in the calibration somehow. I found this article and performed the 20 minute calibration. The Activity ring is working now.

TThe fellow that did the Apple Watch class could not answer the question. I did try calibrating it as mentions in the attached post & that didn't really help. I will try again tomorrow & use "other" exercise & see if that makes a difference.

Have done the "20 minute calibration" three times. No help. I did try the "other" work around and that did properly record my activity.  Something is defintely awry.

Today I used "other" on the exercise rind as well as Map My Walk & the calorie count was only dinner end by 10. I used the exercise ring in my Zumba class & it was also very close to my normal calorie burn. Soooooo, for now I will use only the "other" for my exercise in order to not get double credit on my Lose It app.

i really love the heart rate monitor as it is so much easier than the app I was using - faster too.

I guess I will use the 'Other' workout option also. However, there is a technical question but the variables are many. The sensors may have problems recognizing or obtaining readings from different individuals. i.e: fit or snugness of the band, skin issues (my skin is very thin as I am older). The watch needs to register heart rate.
