Q: Notification Center: no Facebook or Twitter notifications

Since I can remember, notifications for Facebook and Twitter simply will not work for me in OS X. I believe this issue started around the end of Mavericks and has now lasted well into Yosemite. I've tried literally everything: a complete clean install of Yosemite, deleting and re-adding Facebook and Twitter accounts in the Internet Accounts system preferences pane, logging in and out of iCloud, logging out or removing OS X integration under the security settings on Facebook and Twitter sites, double checking Notification Center settings and preferences for Facebook and Twitter, deleting the Notification Center folder and preference files in the user library, literally everything. Nothing changes. Every other app's notifications work flawlessly, but Facebook and Twitter do nothing.

I figured these features were simply broken either on Apple's end or on Facebook's or Twitter's, until I purchased a MacBook Air last week for my wife. Upon setting it up for her and adding her Facebook account, she immediately began receiving Facebook notifications in Notification Center and it still works flawlessly a week later. I've compared all of her settings to mine, and they're identical. I'm starting to think it's my account that's the problem. Searching the web yields limited results for this issue; it seems a small percentage of users experience the same issue I'm having but no solid fix has ever been discovered.

Does anyone have anything they can offer for me to try that I haven't yet? Thanks!

Click the "Share" icon in the Safari menu bar.

Are Facebook and Twitter listed in the pop-up?

Yes, they both do and they appear to work. I noticed that Twitter is able to gather my location when I clock the location services arrow in the post dialog box, but Facebook returns a "not available" message when I click the arrow. Not sure that means anything, just thought I'd mention it. Thanks.

    System Preferences > Internet Accounts

    Is Facebook listed?

    Do you have Java installed?

Yes, Facebook is listed in Internet Accounts. And yes, the latest release of Java is installed! Could that be causing an issue? That's one thing that's different with my wife's new computer. She does not have Java installed.

Make sure you haven't set Do Not Disturb as explained in this support article. Java is completely irrelevant.

Do Not Disturb is definitely not set.

If you enter your Facebook or Twitter account on the other Mac, are the notifications received on it? What about the other accounts on your Mac?

We may have something here. I deleted my Facebook account on my Mac and added my wife's. Went and posted on her timeline, and instantly received a desktop notification in Notification Center.

I sort of suspected this would be the case. Something is wrong with either my Facebook account, or the linking between my Facebook and iCloud accounts. It's not computer related at all. It's almost like I need a way to contact Apple and tell them to push the rest button on my iCloud account. Is there a way to do this or anything else I can try?

iCloud is not involved. What about your Facebook account on your wife's computer?

I deleted my wife's Facebook account from her Mac and added mine, had her write on my timeline, and much to my surprise, it worked. I received a notification for my account on her Mac. So now we're back to the problem being something to do with my computer. The combination of my Facebook account on my computer results in no notifications.

    Back up all data.

Open the Library folder in your home folder by holding down the option key and selecting

              Go ▹ Library

from the Finder menu bar. Navigate in the usual way to the following item and move it to the Trash, but don't empty yet:

              Application Support/NotificationCenter

Log out or restart the computer. Empty the Trash. Recreate your notification settings, if necessary, and test.

Thanks Linc. I actually already tried that and it made no difference. I'd try it again, but after deleting it the first time I now have no Notification Center folder under Application Support.

There are thousands of reports on this site of problems with social web notifications, and an equal number of proposed solutions, most of which look like voodoo to me. I don't use Facebook or Twitter myself, so I can't test any of them.

In the Library folder, there should be a subfolder named "Facebook." You could try deleting that. See the discussions linked below for other ideas, which seem to have worked for someone. Perhaps Apple Support would know something, though I wouldn't bet on it.

Why are Facebook notifications not showing up in Notification Center?

facebook notifications going missing - can someone test this out?

I solved it! You have the option to sign in to Facebook with either your email address or phone number. I've always used my email address (and used my email address on my wife's computer, and used her email address on my computer and hers) but I decided to delete the account then add it again, this time using my phone number and password. Instantly I began receiving notifications in Notification Center! I have no idea why this works, but it does.
