Q: MacBook Pro will not power up even when plugged in

Follow these steps:

Restart your Mac with the Shift button pressed.

- Shut down your Mac

- Wait until your computer turns off and after that press the Power button

- Right after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key

- Release the Shift key when you see a grey Apple sign and the progress bar below this sign

- Once you see Desktop, start a Disk Utility scan to detect and repair file system errors (don't forget to choose your main hard drive)

- Click on Verify Disc and then, if asked to fix problems, on Repair Disk

- After this, click on Verify Disk Permissions and then on Repair Disk Permissions

- After the process is finished, shut down your Mac and turn it back on after about 30 seconds

Yep, that done it! I looked for the SMC reset thing before but it was different to this one, thanks.

Now to get it to charge up! All I have is a big "X" in the battery display  .

That suggests that the battery is dead or the connection is faulty.  I would keep the charger attached for an hour or so to see if there is any change.

Can you boot your MBP now?

If you can, post this from System Information>Power:

(make certain that the charger is connected)

If the OSX does not detect a battery it will throttle the MBP and that is probably a contributing element to slow performance.  I suggest that you install a new battery from Apple or order one from here:

eshop.macsales.com/shop/powerbook/batteries/

Then you can start troubleshooting for other possible problems.
