Q: FCS & FCX

I have couple of quick questions..

I am running on FCS ( FCP 7.0.3 ) and my OSX is 10.6.8. My studio is always busy and we run hectic with TV production. My question is

1. Can i install FCX in the same machine? if yes, Can someone guide me about it?

2. Can i go ahead and upgrade my system to YOSEMITE ? Will it cause any problems for my FCP?

3. Is there a option in FCX to Split my working interface to two monitors ?

My system Specs :

Mac OSX 10.6.8

2x2.26Ghz Quad core Intel

6GB 1066 MHz DDR3

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    Q1. Yes you can.

Q2. Yosemite is required for the current version of FCP X. Ask the guys in the Final Cut Studio forum for how FCP 7 will fair on Yosemite.

    Q3. Yes.

Here is the Apple support doc on best practices. Just about everyone I know follows the second method (both on a single partition) without issues.

An alternative is to run multiple systems and boot into the one you need when you need to. I still have a Snow leopard system on which I have both FCS and FCP X 10.0.9. It's rock-solid stable and I intend to maintain it in its current state for the foreseeable future – not only for FCS applications but some others that are important to me and aren't necessarily supported in 10.10.

FCP 7 seems to work OK with 10.10, but Motion does not and the preference pane of Qmaster can only be opened from the Terminal. DVD Studio Pro works but with some reported menu issues.

    Good luck.

    Hi Shiv

Yes you can have both 7 and X running on same machine. Installation of 7 may require using a disk image or terminal.

Philipp Hodgetts 7toX app is an excellent program to have if you want to transfer any projects from 7toX Really can't recommend it enough.

If your MP is pre late 2008( I think) then you are "officially" limited to Lion and earlier version of FCPX. However, I have run Mavericks and FCPX 10.1.1 on a 2006 MP1.1 with no major issues after updating GPU.

When you upgrade, I highly recommend that you do a clean install and not use Migration Assistant. MA will give you grief, especially going from 10.6.

    Hope this helps, Greg

Fantastic.. I am gonna follow a clean install on a different partition, so i can have both the OSX and the support applications running without any issues.

Let me try this and will update the progress. Thanks you so much for the information.
