Using iPhone as music player

I am a longtime Apple user but just started using iPhone.

iPhone is not really the same as an iPod for playing music. I have a separate drive for my iTunes library of over 100k songs.

  1. I have great difficulties loading and deleting music from iTunes on the iPhone.
  2. It's always asking me to log-in to the iTunes store.
  3. Songs appear on my iPhone iTunes that I did not load.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there any way to get the iPhone to behave more like an iPod? Is this why people jail-break their iPhones?

Thanks

iPhone 5c, iOS 8.3

The drill shouldn't be any different on the phone than the other devices. Are you using iTunes with the phone plugged in via USB to sync? Over WiFi? Cloud?

With 100k songs I assume you aren't trying to sync the entire lot. I would suggest starting out small (pick one album), note what seems weird, and report that in detail here. Be specific - we don't know what you might mean by "difficult".

Songs that you have purchased from the iTunes Store but have not been downloaded to the device will appear with a cloud icon next to them unless you go to Settings -> Music and turn off "Show All Music".

Thanks for your response.

I've got the iPhone plugged in via USB to my MacBook Pro which is connected via USB to the master library.

I don't want to sync at all. Rather, I'd like to move songs on and off the iPhone.

Within iTunes on the MacBook I cannot delete anything from the phone.

I also cannot load an album from the master library. The song titles show up grey on the iPhone with a serrated circle to the left.

Thanks again
