2. An AirPort Card isn’t the same as an AirPort Disk, which is simply an external USB drive plugged into an AirPort base station.

Jun 5, 2015 2:25 PM in response to Gibbyyy_0015by LaPastenague,If you have an apple router upstairs. Then you can buy an airport extreme or express from ebay.. put it in extend wireless mode.. and simply plug ethernet into the old imac. You would do all the setup from later Mac or iOS device.
If the upstairs is not apple then you should buy express which can do wireless bridge.. or buy whatever suitable wireless bridge that matches your main router.. brand will not matter.. then plug it into the iMac.
Another alternative is EOP (homeplug) adapters.. you buy them in pair.. plug one upstairs into mains wall socket and ethernet to the main router and the other adapter into the wall next the iMac and run ethernet to the iMac.. the devices usually have a pair button so they create a transparent ethernet link over power lines.. they don't always work.. it will depend on circuits in the house.. but they often work better than wireless bridges.
