Q: Watch and wifi connection

I have a wifi that reaches 200ft with a strong connection.  Have no problem with iPhone or iPad at this distance. If I leave my paired iphone next to the router and start walking I only get 40-50ft before I drop connection.  The watch is suppose to switch from bluetooth to the wifi the iPhone is connected to

    Greetings protees,

Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.

It appears that your Apple Watch may not be using the available Wi-Fi network when your iPhone is out of Bluetooth range. There are some steps that can help troubleshoot the situation in About Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on Apple Watch.

First, make sure your Wi-Fi router meets these requirements:

    Compatible Wi-Fi for Apple Watch

Your Apple Watch can connect to a Wi-Fi network:

    • If your iPhone, while connected to your watch with Bluetooth, has connected to the network before
    • If the Wi-Fi network is 802.11b/g/n 2.4GHz

For example, Apple Watch won't connect:

    • To 5GHz Wi-Fi, or public networks requiring logins, subscriptions, or profiles
    • If your paired iPhone has never connected to that network before

If it does, try these steps next:

If you need help with your connection

    1. Move your Apple Watch and paired iPhone close together, to make sure they're in range.
    2. On your iPhone, swipe up to open Control Center.
    3. Make sure that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are turned on.
    4. Restart your Apple Watch and iPhone.
    5. Unpair your devices. Then pair them again.

    Best Regards,

    Jeremy

As stated above as long as you have a 2.4GHz network that the phone has previously joined the watch should join it as well. You can test it by shutting off your phone and then sending a message to someone. You can use Messages and Siri on the watch on wifi alone without the phone. I'm not sure if there's another function but those two work.
