Q: Audio on Videos within the Photo App?

Hello,

Im migrating all my photos from over the years into the Mac Photo App, however, whenever I open a video there isn't any audio?  The video plays fine but there isn't a control for volume (I set it to high via the keyboard) and when I open the video separately the audio is fine.

 

Am I missing something or is there a third party modification to add audio playback to my videos?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

    How are you migrating to Photos?  Have you opened an iPhoto Library or Aperture Library in Photos to convert it to Photos format or are you importing the media files manually? what is the format of your videos? AVI? MOV?

    It appears just to be old videos, they're in the .Mov format but quicktime doesn't play the audio either, however in VLC they do have audio.   Anything that I have filmed with an iPhone or a newer digital camera is fine for the audio front.

     

    in terms of making this new library I have just been dragging the files from the finder into albums i've created on the Photo App.  Do you think it may be worth trying to convert the old movies into .mp4?

    mov is just a container format, which basically means it could contain a wide variety of audio & video codecs, not all of which are compatible with the playback features of OS X. (VLC uses its own decoders, which is why it will often play something that Quicktime Player will not.)

     

    To see what codecs are used in your problem files, you can select one in the Finder & use command+i to open the Info window. In the "more info" section, it should list the codecs that file uses.

     

    Depending on the codecs, you should be able to convert the files to something OS X supports.

    It is good to know, that the videos are not silent in VLC.  That means, that the audio is included in the MOV container and not referenced outside. A frequent problem with AVI or MOW files is, that they will not play when transferred to a different drive or computer, because referenced media files cannot be accessed in the new location.
