Bluetooth connect to HP mouse

Using Imac, Snow Leopard (Intel processor). I have HP bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I put booth into connect mode. Went to bluetooth Icon to set up new device, waited forever nothing happened. Used another forum that suggested I go to Library>Preferences and delete the plist file for bluetooth and restart did so no help. The keyboard and mouse were items that were given, when my wife helped someone move no cd's.. I run Linux and not afraid of line commands but never had a mac before so don't know line commands if needed. I know the Mac is old but was gift and is upgraded as far as I can get to.
