How do I decrease or turn off iPad sleep mode?
The Sleep mode is too short. If I stop for a moment to answer a question or a phone call, sleep mode takes over and I must sign it to resume activity.

A screen lock and a passcode lock are two different states. "Sleep", strictly speaking is not accurate as the device is still performing a variety of functions. Only the screen is locked to prevent unwanted interactions. "Sleep" would imply the phone is in a dormant state.
