How do I decrease or turn off iPad sleep mode?
The Sleep mode is too short. If I stop for a moment to answer a question or a phone call, sleep mode takes over and I must sign it to resume activity.

A screen lock and a passcode lock are two different states. "Sleep", strictly speaking is not accurate as the device is still performing a variety of functions. Only the screen is locked to prevent unwanted interactions. "Sleep" would imply the phone is in a dormant state. It's not However, if you wish to suggest that Apple change to the terms the use, you can do that here:
Thank you. What a relief. 🙂 A better word for "Auto-Lock" would be "Sleep Time." The "Lock/Unlock" term is sufficient for "Security."
As a writer, I often find techs have trouble outside their jargon limitations. I have experience with techs. My son is one. I worked in Customer Service and Sales for most of my career.
Go to Settings > General > Auto-Lock and change the time.
