It sounds like youre able to send photos with AirDrop from the computer to the phone without issue, but cannot send them from the phone to the computer. On the phone AirDrop is on all the time when you enable it, but on the Mac you need to start AirDrop first THEN you should see it in the phone as an option:
Mac Basics: AirDrop lets you send files from your Mac to nearby Macs and iOS devices
- In Finder, select Go > AirDrop, or select AirDrop in the sidebar of a Finder window.
