How do you remove the zero byte photo files on the iMac

im trying to delete these weird "grey" files that have zero bytes in them and they seem to be MULTIPLYING AS THEY ARE BEING DELETED!!! Am I missing a few brain cells?! Last time I checked, "Delete"meant to discard or get rid of something, NOT multiply it! Ggrrrrrrrrrr!!!
