Jun 7, 2015 3:52 AM in response to rgs1511by Dewald 0101,Download the software for the iPad rather than getting it from the internet.
Once the download is complete, put the iPad in DFU mode again and let ITunes pick the iPad up. After that, HOLD the alt key and then click restore. This will pop up a window where you need to select the image. So that will now be in you download folder. Select it and let it restore.
Good luck

Jun 8, 2015 7:37 AM in response to rgs1511by ChrisJ4203,★HelpfulBecause that is not the latest iOS for the iPad, you will not be able to load those. That is the error you are getting, because you are trying to load a non-available iOS on the device. You need to connect the device to iTunes and click on restore. You will need to restore with iOS 8.3.

Jun 8, 2015 7:46 AM in response to rgs1511by Dewald 0101,★HelpfulRemember not all iPads can go up to OS 8.3. So search your model and see what the latest software is. If its the wrong software OS version it will cause issues.

Jun 8, 2015 9:22 AM in response to Dewald 0101by Demo,rgs1511 said that it was an iPad Air. That can be updated to iOS 8.3. Only the very first iPad that Apple made, cannot be updated to iOS 8.3. All other models can be updated to iOS 8.3.

Jun 8, 2015 12:08 PM in response to Dewald 0101by ChrisJ4203,The issue had to do with the OP trying to load versions of iOS that are no longer eligible for installation. You cannot pick and choose the version of iOS you want to use during a restore, or anytime actually. You use what iTunes installs, which is the most current version. Downloading the files from the internet and attempting to install them is what caused the errors received.

Jun 8, 2015 2:22 PM in response to ChrisJ4203by rgs1511,I have now found and downloaded iOS 8.3 to the desktop and tried that both in standard and DFU mode. In DFU mode I got the message "the device can't be found". Maybe, just maybe, the original cable that came with the iPad is faulty. I have another PC at home (a MacMini) and will try that next.

Jun 8, 2015 2:50 PM in response to rgs1511by ChrisJ4203,Why are you downloading the iOS to the desktop? This does not make sense, unless you are dealing with a jailbroken device and are tying to fix it or trying to jailbreak it. Just connect the device to the computer and iTunes and restore. All this other that you are doing is just making a mess of things. All these tries to install the incorrect iOS may have made changes to your hosts file and everything. See this support document and follow the links to the general error you got to start with, and see if you can fix it from there. Get help with iOS update and restore errors - Apple Support

Jun 9, 2015 1:50 AM in response to ChrisJ4203by rgs1511,I have downloaded to the desktop because my internet connection is very flaky. iTunes and the OS on my MacBook Pro are all the latest versions so that should not be the problem. The iPad air is wifi only and is not and does not need to be jailbroken. Because of varying error messages I suspect the usb - lightning cable that came with the iPad might have developed a fault because this all started when I unplugged the iPad after a charging session. I now have an appointment at an Apple Store to see if their repairs department can diagnose and fix this problem.

Jun 9, 2015 8:39 AM in response to rgs1511by ChrisJ4203,One other hint for you as you do this updates if you have a questionable internet connection. I do this all the time to prevent errors to the devices. When you check for updates and it finds one, then select download only. That will download the file to the computer, right where iTunes expects it, and directly from Apple's update server. Then, if there is a problem with the download, it does not affect your iOS device, since it has not taken the time to make adjustments to the device. After the file has successfully downloaded, you go ahead and select Check for Update again, and this time it will go through the update process. The file is already on the computer, so the only thing it needs to do via the internet is verify the file and activate. I've never experienced any issues since doing this.

Jun 9, 2015 12:29 PM in response to ChrisJ4203by rgs1511,Well all has been revealed. During a reset the iPad showed the Apple logo for about 15 seconds and then there was a brief red flash on the screen followed by a shut down. During my visit to the nearest Apple Store (about 40 miles away) I was told this signified a hardware failure. End result part exchanged the faulty device and replaced it with a new/refurbished? device of same spec and under new warranty. This is now up and running and fully synchronised with all my old settings. An expensive failure for a unit that was only 14 months old. However I am addicted and use it more frequently than my Macbook so it had to be done.
