Q: reinstalling final cut express

Just purchased new MacBook Pro (Retina Mid 2015 running 10.10.3) and am attempting to reinstall Final Cut Express 4 (which is the latest version I have) from original DVD purchased in 2009. Installation seemed to go fine, however when finished I was unable to open some of my FCE project files. Message said "File format is too new for this version of the application." Don't understand since I had just loaded the same application that most of the files were originally edited with.

On other FCE files I got the message "The file format...is from and earlier version. Would you like to update? Once saved, this file cannot be opened by previous versions...." Those messages seem contradictory can anyone help me to understand what I'm dealing with.  Thanks.

Normally this should only occur if you had edited your old projects with FCE 4.0.1 and were trying to open them with the basic FCE 4.0.0, but occasionally it can happen even when using the same version.

It's some sort of glitch but it's so long since I have used FCE that I can't remember whether there is any cure.

I don't know why you are getting the second message unless you have created those particular projects with an earlier version.

It's really time to leave FCE as it is considered obsolete by Apple 4 years ago and was never designed to work with Yosemite. Many people can't even install it.
