Time Machine did not transfer my Files and Folders from my previous

Dear all,

Recently, I re-format my old MacBookPro 15-inch and i used Migration Assistant to transfer all my files from my Time Machine.

Unfortunately, there are empty (no files and folders) at my Desktop after the migration. I did check at my Time Machine (MacintoshHD->user-> I cannot find "Desktop" at this directory).

May I know how can I get back all the files and folders at my previous Desktop?

Thanks,

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Dear Eric,

I tried to access my Time Machine by (Backups.backupdb -> AndrewTanMacBookPro -> 2015-06-07-140309 -> MacintoshHD -> Users -> AndrewTan -> I cannot find Desktop over here.)

At first, I assume that Time Machine will backup all my files and folders automatically. However, it seems like Time Machine does not backup the files and folders at my Desktop. For example, I have several Folders at my Desktop such as "MRIM" and "MRIM Documents" which i need it urgently.

Please advice.

Dear Eric and Drew,

Here are the print screen for the preferences of my Time Machine as stated below:

1) Local snapshots as space permits

2) Hourly backups for the past 24 months

3) Daily backups for the past month

4) Weekly backups for all previous months.

Unfortunately, it never stated that Time Machine will backup the files and folders at the Desktop. So, I am not sure whether Time Machine will keep a copy of my folders and files at the Desktop.

I followed the methods that proposed by Eric as shown in the attachment. However, I only managed go 6/8/15 2.00PM which I already re-formated my laptop. As you can see on the right (top) in the attachment, the lat copy of the backup should be on March 2014. Unfortunately, Time Machine does not allow me to access the backup on March 2014. It only let me access the latest backup which is on 6/8/15 2.00PM. I really hope Time Machine allows me to access the backup on 6/6/15 which I haven't re-format my laptop (the last copy of backup before reformat the laptop).

To be clear you should avoid looking inside the folders on a Time Machine disk via Finder. You are meant to use the 'Time Machine' interface to browse & restore files.

As Eric suggested, open the Time Machine menu item & select 'Enter Time Machine'. This is the 'star field' with the history of your files.

Navigate to your home folder & see if the Desktop is included in any backup.

Time Machine can exclude items from backups - please check the Time Machine preferences in System Preferences, click the options button to view items that are excluded.

That text is describing how Time Machine should work, it has nothing to do with the data in your backups, please ignore it.

You also didn't quote the next line in that text which is the critical point to remember with Time Machine.

The Desktop is backed up by the default settings so it should be saved unless you excluded it. Click the options button to see if the Desktop is in the list of exclusions - if it is then there is nothing we can do.

If it is not excluded you need to work out why the history is so short. Time Machine will delete older backups if disk space is limited, but I can't understand how it would only clear out the Desktop folder, it normally removes all backups for the oldest backup. Do you have any backup of other folders that is before the date you need?

You mention reformatting the laptop - if you do that & continue to use the same Time Machine disk as a backup it is possible for older backup files to be removed when making a new backup of the device - Time Machine will always create space by deleting older files when free space is limited. That is just what Time Machine is designed to do.

If you want to keep files around forever do not use Time Machine to store them. Use another system that will not automatically delete files.

I would also remove one Time Machine disk & check the history (via 'Browse Time Machine' in the menu), then disconnect that disk & look at the history of the other disk - it is easy to get confused between which backup is on which Time Machine disk.
