Clearly is is not something to be feared or obsessed over.
Download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper and Grand Perspective (both free) and open them. Both of them will show all of your files and the respective sizes. This will allow you to identify exactly what you have on your MBP so you can identify your storage problems.
