'Saving' podcasts on my iPod Classic doesn't work.

I want to save podcasts on my iPod Classic, having listened to them. However, having selected 'Save episode' from the small menu obtained from clicking the circled arrow to the right of the podcast title, the episode comes back as unsaved the next time I connect to iTunes.

How can I make the 'saved' state of the podcast stick?

It's an iPod Classic 160GB, software version 2.0.5 and iTunes version 11.4 (OS is 10.6.8).

Check your options for what is kept in your library, and what is synced to the device. You want to make sure the library keeps all episodes, and make sure the device includes played episodes. You may need to include some sort of smart playlist that captures played or unplayed episodes of your favourite casts.
