Q: deleting photos from my i phone once downloaded!

How come delete photos from your iPhone never is an option any longer once  i have downloaded into my macbook i photo?  What am i doing wrong?  Used to plug in download into I phone then erase from I phone question would pop up and I could do so.   Need these photos off my phone  what am i doing wrong???
