I am having a horrible time trying to open any recent photos to edit in Photoshop. What can I do?

How can I open a photo to edit in Photoshop Elements? Since the switch to Photos I'm having a horrible time.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

export to the desktop and use form there until PSE is updated for Photos and OD X 10.10.3
