Q: I want to purchase a current printer for an old Mac.

My mom has a Performa 6200 CD.  Uncertain of the processor speed.  Started out OS 7, base ROM & HD RAM - upgraded ROM, RAM and OS. Now OS 8.6.  Think the HD is 6 gig.  Apps are ClarisWorks & Quicken.

Her printer - StyleWriter 1200 - is dying. I  want to replace her SW with a new Mac compatible printer  (her BD's coming up) . Two probs - new printers are USB and are Mac OS X.    HELP!!!

Performa, Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

If you could buy one locally from a dealer selling used computers, peripherals, etc. and actually print a test page to see the total page count, you'd know how much usage it had.  Not having to get it packed and shipped, with whatever collateral damage might occur in transit from getting turned in every direction, would be a definite plus, as well as a way to save some money.  I bought 2 HP 6Ps and 1 HP 6MP from Goodwill stores, at least 10+ years ago.  Each cost about $30-$35, but they are very good printers.  Like the ads state, "your mileage may vary," because you might get one on its last legs.  On top of that, the cost of new toner is expensive.  I suggested the Epson Stylus Color 740 because it's a versatile printer that supports parallel, USB, and Mac serial connectivity.  The ink is still widely available, but as indicated earlier, they're just 2 drop-in tanks of ink — they don't have the printhead on it.  Over an extended period of non-use, the jets in the printhead can become badly clogged from dried ink.  I've heard that cleaning them out is a job for a professional, but maybe there's a web tutorial for accomplishing this on an old, out-of-warranty printer.

Looking at the high cost of the Toner & the age degradation of the drum, I think I'll cancel my search for the Laserjet.

I'll redouble my search for an inkjet - if the printhead is clogged, but otherwise in working condition, I'd pay to get the head(s?) unclogged.

Her BD has gone by, but I'd rather gift her a fully functioning 740 Color.  The unclogging will have to be done once as long as SHE owns it.  I was figuring it it would cost me ≤  $80 (Printer + Shipping).  Have NO idea how much a professional will charge, but would be amazed if it took longer than an hour's worth of labor.  If the 740 Color was for  moi, I'd look for a do-it-myself video.

I have an Apple Laserwriter IIg that has been siting in my office for years unused.  It worked when I last tried it, but I have no (easy) way to confirm if it would work today.  I have always held on to it because it is the only one of the II series that worked with ethernet, as well as the serial port.

I would be happy to donate it to you for your hoped rehabilitation for your Mom's computer usage, as I always wanted someone who would appreciate it to have it.

I would even meet you half way between Bakersfield and the San Fernando Valley somewhere on I-5!

What version of Quicken does your Mom use?

    Dear MichaelLAX,

I really appreciate the offer.  If you read the back & forth re: the arguments against the idea of my getting an HP Laserjet, it was made clear to me that it was/is a bad idea.  I'm guessing all brands of laserjets have similar moving parts.  Sooooo, I'm back on the hunt for a working inkjet.

I'm avoiding Apple's Canon built StyleWriters.  My mom, at this point, has had 3 StyleWriter 1200s. The original one lasted 20 years, replacement 1 was DOA and replacement 2 lasted 3 mo.s - had a 1 mo. warranty.

Dunno why you asked about Quicken, but FYI it's Q98.

Again, thank you for the offer.  There are a number of old Epson inkjets that are Mac OS 8 compliant. I'm trying to  track down a working Stylus 740 Color printer.  If you know someone who has one, please let me know.

How do I tell the Apple community that my Q has been Answered?  The HP forum has a Solved checkbox.

Here's an explanation with some guidance from Apple.  Did you end up going with an Epson Color Stylus 740?  If so, it should give your Mom dependable service for some time.

Ryan42 has an Epson "in the mail" to me for m' mom.  I've a friend who's been a Macintosh/Apple user since before OS7.  Anyhow, when I mentioned the Epson printer (as a replacement to her Stylewriter 1200), he remarked that he'd used it,calling it one of the sturdiest inkjets of its era.

A Quick aside to you & Ryan42.  Jeff, I looked for the Solved/This helped me choices at the bottom of the messages, but all I saw was the blue Reply.  I turned email updates on earlier this eve', and received two notes - one from each of you.

Hi, again, Jeff!  I did find (and bought) a Stylus 740.  It's on its way via FedEx.  Ryan42's  (shipped via the USPS) was damaged in transit.  I reimbursed him for the printer/shipping.

................The reason I'm reaching out to you is that I need the printer drivers on Floppy Disk.  BADLY.  Ryan42 sent the drivers on CD and floppies (labelled Lotus 123 1, 2 & 3)................ The Performa never recognized the inserted CD.   The FDD worked, but there was something wrong with the first diskette abt ½ way through ................ I need "clean" Mac disks w/ the drivers soon.  Can you help?

    Charlie
