Why won't Apple make purchased iBooks available to read in windows?

I am a teacher of Film & Media Studies and like to have few books open for cross referencing that really an Ipad is unsuitable for. My laptop is Windows 8.1 as it has to be compatible with the school network.

Have I made a silly and expensive mistake purchasing reference books from iTunes or does someone different?

I have several more that I need to purchase to read over the summer holiday so a prompt response to this request would be appreciated.

Nobody here can tell you why Apple has not done something you want, but you can ask for it via

It would seem to make sense for Apple to produce an ibooks app for Windows to expand its ebook market, but with no sign of this after 5 years now I would not be optimistic.
