i want to run auto cad but thought it would be to much of a drain on the mac as i use it for just about everything else at work and didn't want it to start crashing , i was a wondering if i can connect the mac pro to the mac via a thunderbolt cable ?? and access the mac pro from my desktop

Then you can use the iMac's screen as a monitor for the Mac Pro. See:

You can also also connect the two Macs to the same network and share screens and files
