that does not have the hard drive brand on it, re: Macintosh HD.

Sometimes, a start-up in Safe mode followed by the repair disk permission
in Disk Utility can help with some kinds of user issues. Also, there may be
a pile of Console logs in the OS X from that incident, though they are hard
to understand like a foreign language, and may cause undo anxiety.
•Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support
Or if you have more than one user account, try starting in the second user.
Then, login or restart in the main user. - And if you have your own images
for desktop background in the computer, try them, too. You can direct the
System Preference> Desktop/Screensaver to select from almost any folder.
My image folders are not stored in or on Desktop in any of my user accounts.
