Has anyone used the discussion option in iTunes U?

I was thinking of incorporating the discussion option as a means to include more writing in my class. Has anyone tried this and if so what are the pro/cons of using the discussion option?

iPad, iOS 8.3

I have used it for the last two semesters with great results.

Pros: easy, integrated into iOS and iTunes U, notifications.
Cons:students turn off notifications sometimes
