Back up all data, then remove Avast according to the developer's instructions. Restart.
If you tried to remove Avast by dragging an application to the Trash, you'll have to reinstall it and then follow the instructions linked above.

Spotlight Search VPN in finder >> Open Avast VPN >> Select uninstall. GONE.
<*** Backup, remove, reinstall -- for real ??? ***>
It's just that easy - open Avast VPN, select 'uninstall' from the file menu.
I'd like to know why it showed up all of a sudden, randomly trying to connect to a vpn i haven't signed up for.
To uninstall Avast (and its annoying sidekick, Secureline VPN), launch the program. (To find the program go to the Applications folder--or just use the Spotlight Search function, which is a magnifying glass icon in the far upper right corner of your screen, next to your name and the date/time.)
When the Avast dialog box asks you to Connect, click the little black triangle next to the word Connect, then choose Optimal from the dropdown menu. Then click Connect. Only after you have truly connected to the Avast network will Avast's menu options appear, along the upper left of your screen. Click the File menu and choose Uninstall. No backing up needed (to my knowledge).
Yo Brundo, edit this so the select uninstall answer is the recommended answer if you can. The full reinstall is completely unnecessary.
Perfect, and the most simple of solutions....THANKS!
This is the way to write procedure, Nice and precise! Thank you Suzanne3t. It worked perfectly.
Thanks, Brundo! I'm an underemployed editor of reference non-fiction. I love writing directions!
Now I understand. I am retired nuclear engineer, who spent a lot of time writing all kinds of procedures.
