The device will shut down if it overheats. It is built into the iOS. Leave it in a cool place, then try to reset the device. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone should reboot. I would not try to do that for a few hours after bringing it in to cool. You may have to plug the device into the charger and let it charge for about 30 minutes and try the reset with it plugged in.
You could leave it on the charger overnight. Thats really all you could do. I highly recommend bringing it to the Apple store and say it just stop working instead of saying it was left out in the sun. Good luck!🙂

That's a lousy recommendation. It's likely that Apple will discover what happened and why. Lying is not likely to encourage individuals to assist with problem resolution.

Let it cool down. Then follow Chris' recommendations.
FWIW, I seriously doubt that you've caused any permanent damage. I've never done that to an iPhone but my iPod has been left in the sun many times and each time, after cool-down, things were good. I never even had to do the reset.

Looks like I anticipated your question.
Again, LET IT COOL DOWN THOROUGHLY.
By the way, disconnect the charger. That will slow down the cooling.

Depending on how hot it was outside you could have fried the board instead the iPhone. I would take it to the Apple store for them to look at.

Cooling down is priority. Do that first. Then you can charge to your heart's content.
